3 things to remember if you're involved in a hit-and-run

It's one of those basic things that you learn when you get your license. If you hit another car, you stop to check. But for some reason, not everyone follows the rules.

Whether your injuries are minor or severe, here are a few things you should do if you're involved in a hit-and-run accident.

Get medical help, if needed

If you or someone at the scene is injured, the first thing you need is medical attention. Call 911 so emergency workers can assist you with your injuries.

If, after some time passes, you start to notice pain, swelling or bruising. Or if something just doesn't feel right, make sure you visit the doctor.

Gather information, write it down

Ideally, you'd be able to get the license plate number of the car that hit you. If that's not possible, try to get a good description of the other car so that you have more information when the police arrive on the scene.

If you're able, write down as much information about the accident while it's still fresh in your mind. Include street names, weather conditions and the time of day.

Call the police

If there are injuries or the effects of the crash will cause traffic and safety issues, call 911 to get an officer to the scene right away. If there are no emergencies associated with the accident, then call the local number so an officer can help you file a report.

Whether there is an emergency or not, in the event of a hit-and-run, you will need to call the police to file a report. Not only is it a legal requirement, the police report will also be important when you submit a claim to your car insurance agency.
