An alleged drunk Stockton commissioner hits, kills a pedestrian

The 77-year-old former Stockton vice mayor and current commissioner with the Port of Stockton was taken into police custody on the evening of Nov. 28 for his role in causing the death of an 82-year-old pedestrian.

A spokesperson with the Stockton Police Department said that dispatchers first started receiving calls summoning officers to the scene of a crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle shortly before 8 p.m. that evening. When the officers arrived at the intersection of Fontana Avenue and Country Club Boulevard, they found the victim laying there in the middle of the road.

Despite the paramedics' efforts to save the victim, he died at the scene. Police soon turned their attention to the driver behind the wheel of a nearby car. They determined that he was allegedly responsible for striking the victim and noted that he also appeared to be drunk.

They placed him under arrest and transported him to the San Joaquin County Jail. It's there that he was booked on both vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence (DUI) charges.

It's unclear when his arrangement was scheduled for or if he will be let out on bond while he waits for his trial to begin.

When pedestrians are struck by cars, these types of crashes tend to result in some of the most serious injuries or fatalities. This is due in large part to them not having the same physical protection that's afforded to drivers by the shell of their cars. If your loved one has been seriously hurt or killed by a negligent motorist, then you'll want to have a Sacramento personal injury attorney on your side to hold the careless driver accountable for their actions.
