A Sacramento County jury has awarded $10.1 million to Mr. Jimmy Contreras, holding California Artisanal Medicine responsible after one of its delivery drivers ran a red light and broadsided him as he drove home from work.
The case was tried in Sacramento County Superior Court in February 2026. Jurors found the defendant responsible for the crash and for the life-altering injuries Mr. Contreras suffered.
The collision caused serious injuries to Mr. Contreras' chest and left lower leg. His leg was badly fractured, requiring him to undergo multiple surgeries.
Before trial, the highest offer to settle the case was $750,000. The jury's verdict is more than 13 times that amount.
Attorneys Christopher W. Wood and Neil J. Ferrera of Dreyer Babich Buccola Wood Campora, LLP tried the case on behalf of Mr. Contreras.
"Mr. Contreras did everything right. He was simply driving home from work when a delivery driver ran a red light and changed his life forever," said attorney Christopher W. Wood. "The defense offered $750,000. This jury listened to the evidence, understood what Mr. Contreras has lost and will continue to live with, and held California Artisanal Medicine fully accountable."
The verdict is a reminder to companies that put drivers on the road that they are responsible for making sure those drivers operate safely, and that juries will hold them accountable when they don't.
