Drunk driving accidents claim thousands of lives each year

On Behalf of | Dec 14, 2021 | Wrongful Death |

Even if you carefully follow traffic safety guidelines and take precautionary measures to avoid an accident, such as staying off of the road during inclement weather, you could become seriously hurt or even killed as a result of a drunk driver. Tragically, people continue to get behind the wheel while heavily intoxicated and cause devastating accidents that leave the families of those who die with lasting emotional pain and financial hardships.

It is imperative for families to take action after losing a loved one as a result of a drunk driver.

How does drunk driving affect one’s abilities behind the wheel?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk drivers have more difficulty with various tasks while on the road, even if they have consumed a relatively small amount of alcohol. For example, those with a BAC level of .02 can struggle to multitask and experience poorer vision, while a BAC level of .08 can adversely affect concentration, memory and muscle coordination. Drivers with a higher BAC level of .15 can struggle to control their vehicle and focus on the road.

How many people die due to drunk driving?

The NHTSA reports that over 10,000 people lost their lives in drunk driving accidents throughout 2019. To look at these statistics another way, roughly 28 people die due to drunk driving every day in the U.S.

Fatal drunk driving accidents are completely preventable and families often struggle with the fact that another driver’s reckless decision claimed their loved one’s life too soon. If your family is facing challenges due to a drunk driver, make sure you go over the details of the accident and your options.
