Does gig employment incentivize risky driving behavior?

Gig positions are exploding in Sacramento and throughout California.

People are using these side-hustles to set their own hours or earn extra cash. Unfortunately, the opportunity may come with consequences, especially on our roads.

The rewards for dangerous behavior

While everyone is responsible for their own actions, apps may be inadvertently offering incentives to take risks.

Many companies offer surge fares for drivers who take shifts in bad weather or during high-traffic times. Both factors increase the risk of an accident. Riders must juggle the potential for extra money with added risks.

Companies also encourage drivers to aim for specific quotas such as a certain number of passengers picked up in a week or deliveries made. These can bring extra cash. These can encourage exhausted drivers to stay on for one more delivery to hit the bonus.

The risk to all motorists

As the gig economy continues to expand, the risk is growing for all motorists. Drivers work in bad conditions and while tired. In many cases, they get paid extra to do so. This only increases the potential for accidents.

A recent study from the University College London found over 40 percent of ride-hail drivers damaged their vehicle. Worse still, 10 percent reported injuries because of these accidents. As more of these jobs become available, more drivers may be willing to take extra risks for additional income.

This means our roads will see another risk. The potential for overworked and tired gig workers.

Understanding what to do

If you are in an accident with a gig driver, preparation is important. Many personal insurance policies don't cover accidents that happen while a driver is working. This means both yourself and the other driver could be left inadequately covered.

A skilled personal injury attorney can help you understand the process around gig insurance. They can help you file an injury claim.
